Formal modelling in Cognitive Science 1: Maths for Neural and Connectionist Modelling

چکیده

Literature There are many mathematics textbooks at intermediate level: e.g. [Boas, 1966]. A good book that we use, is Greenberg’s [Greenberg, 1998]. It is a bit expensive, but a good investment. By now the internet is also a good resource (with the usual caveats) http: //mathworld.wolfram.com contains an encyclopedia of mathematics. A good introductory book in neural computation is Trappenberg’s [Trappenberg, 2002]. A more formal but very good book on neural networks: [Hertz et al., 1991]. See lecture notes Neural Computation on http://homepages.inf.ed.ac.uk/mvanross for more references and applications to neural systems and literature relevant to neural modelling.

A Artificial Neural Networks and Cognitive Modelling

In their heyday, artificial neural networks promised a radically new approach to cognitive modelling. The connectionist approach spawned a number of influential, and controversial, cognitive models. In this article, we consider the main characteristics of the approach, look at the factors leading to its enthusiastic adoption, and discuss the extent to which it differs from earlier computational...

Neural-Symbolic Learning and Reasoning: A Survey and Interpretation

The study and understanding of human behaviour is relevant to computer science, artificial intelligence, neural computation, cognitive science, philosophy, psychology, and several other areas. Presupposing cognition as basis of behaviour, among the most prominent tools in the modelling of behaviour are computational-logic systems, connectionist models of cognition, and models of uncertainty. Re...

Connectionist Models

Connectionist models, also known as Parallel Distributed Processing (PDP) models, are a class of computational models often used to model aspects of human perception, cognition, and behaviour, the learning processes underlying such behaviour, and the storage and retrieval of information from memory. The approach embodies a particular perspective in cognitive science, one that is based on the id...

MODELLING AND ANALYSIS OF A DISCRETE-TIME PRIORITY QUEUING COMPUTER NETWORK WITH PRIORITY JUMPS USING PROBABILITY GENERATING FUNCTIONS

Priority queues have a great importance in the study of computer communication networks in which different types of traffic require different quality of service standards. The discrete-time non-preemptive priority queuing model with priority jumps is proposed in this paper. On the basis of probability generating functions mean system contents and mean queuing delay characteristics are obtained....

Computer Science at Kent Semantic Modulation of Temporal Attention: Distributed Control and Levels of Abstraction in Computational Modelling

1 Introduction There are now many different approaches to the computational modelling of cognition, e.g. and neurophysiologically prescribed connectionist models (O'Reilly & Munakata, 2000). The relative value of different approaches is a hotly debated topic, with each presented as an alternative to the others; that is, that they are in opposition to one another, e.g. However, an alternative pe...
